Case study: Managing finances after losing a loved one
Emma, Crowthorne, Berkshire
Client since: 2019
Adviser name: Jessica Lyons
My name is Emma, and I’ve been working with Jessica Lyon for about two years, ever since my father died.
My dad had been working with Jessica and Rob for quite a long time, so when he died, my mum and I needed to make contact with her and sort out his finances, and to make sure we knew what was going on. That’s when we first started working with Jessica.
She’s basically helped us to understand my dad’s investments and shed light on all sorts of things that had never crossed our minds before. She managed it in a really gentle way to ensure Mum was comfortable with the whole process, and matched her explanations to Mum’s level of expertise in finance. I was bit more questioning and wanted more detail, but she was able to manage both of us really effectively.
She made things very easy. She honestly made me feel like I was her only client. She was always available but, with the pandemic, we’ve met a lot on Zoom. This felt really comfortable, though, and I felt like I knew her well. It was brilliant, actually, because despite Mum being in a different place, we could actually all come together and chat about things. She was equally able to email long messages so that if we hadn’t fully taken things on board during the Zoom call, she could reiterate it all more clearly via email.
Jess made Mum feel really comfortable. Mum felt she had a lot on her plate and a lot of sorting out to do because my dad sadly died very unexpectedly. But Jessica was really kind, patient and happy to explain things in detail. She was available whenever Mum wanted her to be. Mum was also reassured that Jessica was happy to talk to me as well, as there were certain things that Mum didn’t want anything to do with. But because Jessica could speak to me, and I could then transfer that information to Mum, Jessica made it very easy for us to approach things in a way we were both comfortable with.
The three words I would use to describe Jessica are patient, intuitive, and kind – not necessarily words that you would expect from a financial advisor! But in me and my mum’s experience, these qualities have meant the world.
The best thing about working with Black Swan is feeling that they are completely on top of everything and that they understand our situation. They take a big-picture view of everything, but equally have been able to drill right down to the detail and simplify what is a very complicated process. That said, they haven’t dumbed it down or simplified things ineffectively, and the situation has been handled really well.
I would really recommend Black Swan. They have helped us through a really difficult process, but have done so with patience, kindness and efficiency. I almost feel like Jessica has become a friend, and the way that she has managed our case has been really helpful and kind.
